Operations Engineer – Power Generation

About the role:
Are you ready to play a key role in powering the UK’s energy transition? We are seeking a skilled Operations Engineer to join a growing energy company delivering flexible power solutions across gas, battery, solar, wind and hydrogen assets. This is your opportunity to work on cutting-edge infrastructure, optimise plant performance and make a tangible impact on the energy sector.
Your Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain flexible power generation plants safely and efficiently.
- Ensure all work is carried out with health and safety as the top priority, including your own, colleagues’ and third parties’ safety.
- Optimise plant availability and uptime, attending unplanned breakdowns to minimise downtime.
- Monitor and report daily on plant performance, maintain records and manage spare parts using company IT systems.
- Identify and resolve technical issues, escalating where necessary.
- Communicate effectively with the central Operations Desk regarding site performance, availability and tests.
- Supervise and manage third-party contractors and suppliers on site.
- Support commissioning and handover of newly constructed sites.
- Participate in call-out cover as required to maintain site operations.
- Follow company policies, procedures and environmental management systems.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- Extensive hands-on experience with reciprocating gas generators, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience in asset optimisation.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Full UK driving license and willingness to travel.
- Experience supervising contractors or other engineers.
- Knowledge of peaking engine projects and asset management software is advantageous.
Person specification:
- Educated to ONC level or equivalent in Plant Engineering or a relevant discipline, or qualified by experience.
- Strong understanding of gas engine management systems (MWM, Jenbacher, Siemens, MTU, Cummins, Caterpillar).
- Competent in mechanical/electrical fault diagnosis and plant operation.
- Computer literate, familiar with CMMS and Microsoft Office.
- Calm under pressure, resilient, self-motivated and a proactive problem solver.
- Desirable: knowledge of three-phase electrical systems, other engine management systems, and CITB/IOSH certifications.
